April 2012 Trail Run - Rodeo Beach, TMMC Tour, BARF meetup

Saturday, April 7, 2012

Running the open dramatic hills above Marin's Rodeo Beach with views of the Pacific and The City, meeting up with the popular BARF East/North Bay trail run group, and getting an insider's tour of The Marine Mammal Center - all on tap for PARC's April Trail Run.

When   Saturday April 7, 2012. We gather at 8:20 at the end of the road by TMMC (see web page for details) for intros, announcements, and brief trail description before heading out at 8:30.

The drive from PA takes about an hour. For carpooling gather at the 280 and Page Mill Road Park&Ride lot at 7:05am. Carpools are self-organizing and should be on their way by 7:15am. With this longish drive carpooling is encouraged, go with friends, make a day of it!

Where   Marin Headlands -- Rodeo Beach. No parking fee, but there is the GG Bridge toll to pay on the way back home. More park info can be found here.

Going North on 101, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and take the Alexander Ave. exit and turn right toward Sausalito. Travel through the Fort Baker Tunnel. The tunnel entrance is the first road on your left. Signals regulate one-way auto traffic. Go through tunnel and follow road out towards Rodeo Beach. Just prior to the Beach and near the beginning of the Lagoon, a road will take you up the hill to the right. Look for signs indicating The Marine Mammal Center. The Marine Mammal Center will be on the right going up the hill.

All runners please drive past The Marine Mammal Center and park either along side the road at the end of the road (white gate) or park on the dirt on either side of the TMMC gate.

A Google route map from the carpool lot can be found here.

What
Routes for two runs of approximately 11.5 and 8.5 miles. Both with lotsa vertical. We will have printed maps to hand out.

This is a remote trail run and each runner must carry at least one water bottle. To avoid having to search for lost runners we ask every runner to find other runners of approximately the same running ability to form a group. The runners in each group must be able to account for their partners to make sure nobody is lost.

After the run, we will gather at the picnic tables outside of TMMC for a runners' potluck after the run, so please bring food or drink to share.

TMMC Tour Info: Stan Jensen has arranged for a guide to lead an insiders tour of The Marine Mammal Center starting at 11:15am for up to 25 runners. The insiders' tour takes just under one hour and is a "not to miss" opportunity.

OK, everyone wants to know how the 25 tour slots will be allocated. First off, we can only hope to have that many interested people. That would be great for the run and also for TMMC. But just in case there are more than 25 who want to enjoy the insider tour, I'll hand out a playing card to each interested runner before the run. Highest 25 card holders on hand when the tour starts (11:15am) get in. Fine with me if people trade cards.

So what will you do if you miss out on the insider tour? Well, the self-guided public tour is also terrific; If you've never experienced TMMC, you'll be amazed! And we are right there besides the also amazing Pacific with our running buddies on the Marin Headlands, it'll be chill.... Literally, bring warm clothes for after.
