March Trail Run
Palo Alto Baylands Preserve
Sunday, March 1, 2009
This month we run on the nearby flat and fast Baylands trail system with only a minimal drive for those living in PA or nearby. Our reward—easy flat miles with wide open Bay & hills views.
Both a gentle introduction to trail running and an opportunity for long soft and flat miles, this run departs from our usual menu of hilly miles in remote settings. In addition to our typical distances of 7 and 13 miles, Vince will lead a 20 mile marathon prep run.
When   Sunday March 1, 2009. Meet at 8:15am for an 8:30am start.
Carpool: since this run is in Palo Alto, no pre-set carpool arrangements this month.
Where   The run starts and ends at the Palo Alto Baylands Athletic Center, 1900 Geng Rd. PA.
Take the Embarcadero East exit off of 101 in PA. Left at the 2nd light (its a short block between the 1st and 2nd lights). Straight into the parking lot. We'll meet towards the far end of the lot. Google Map.
What   An intermediate run (about 7 miles, 50 feet vertical), a long run (about 12.9 miles, 70 feet vertical), and a pre-marathon (about 20 miles, 90 feet vertical). The intermediate run 'visits' the airport, duck ponds, Ecocenter construction, Byxbee Park landscape 'art', & the dam. The long run sees all that plus getting really out into the Bay on the levies and a quick stop at Shoreline Park before turning around and saying good bye to Vince's pre-marathon group as they continue on. As this is your unusually plush trail run, toilets are available at several points along the route.
This isn't exactly a remote trail run and water is available along the way. However, each runner is still encouraged to carry at least one water bottle. To avoid having to search for lost runners we ask every runner to find other runners of approximately the same running ability to form a group. The runners in each group must be able to account for their partners to make sure nobody is lost.
As usual, there will be a casual 'runners' potluck after the run, so please bring food or drink to share.
Why   An opportunity to choose from a variety of distances while running with our friendly group on the nearby flat and fast Baylands trail system. And, for those of you who have been thinking of getting into trail running, these easy trails are an ideal first step. Come out and try it. You will meet experienced trail runners who can offer advice on trail running - where, how, shoes, etc. Then, next month we will run in nearby Arastradero and Foothills park as a more adventurous second step of an introduction to trail running.
