July Trail Run
Marin Headlands -- Rodeo Beach
Sunday, July 12, 2009
In July we will again run in the Marin Headlands after a long absence and will have the opportunity to attend a guided tour of the newly renovated Marine Mammal Center (MMC) after the run. Our PARC club membership director and MMC volunteer Stan Jensen will be the tour guide. The number of participants for the guided tour will be limited to 20 paid PARC members (unfortunately guests cannot be allowed), as this is a tour not available to the general public and space is limited. Of course there are no participation limits for the runs.
When   Sunday July 12, 2009. Meet at 7:45am for an 8:00am start. Carpool will leave at 7:00am from the Park&Ride lot at 280 and Page Mill Road. We start this run earlier than usual so that the tour of the Marine Mammal Center can get going before noon.
Where   Marin Headlands -- Rodeo Beach. There is no parking fee, but bring $6 for the Golden Gate Bridge toll on the way back. More park info can be found here.
Going North on 101, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and take the Alexander Ave. exit and turn right toward Sausalito. Travel through the Fort Baker Tunnel. The tunnel entrance is the first road on your left. Signals regulate one-way auto traffic. Go through tunnel and follow road out towards Rodeo Beach. Just prior to the Beach and near the beginning of the Lagoon, a road will take you up the hill to the right. Look for signs indicating Marine Mammal Center. The Mammal Center will be on the right going up the hill. All runners shall drive past the Mammal Center and park at the end of the road (white gate). Parking is along the road. The Google map location can be found here.
What   The club will host two runs that are approximately 12 and 9 miles.
This is a remote trail run and each runner must carry at least one water bottle. To avoid having to search for lost runners we ask every runner to find other runners of approximately the same running ability to form a group. The runners in each group must be able to account for their partners to make sure nobody is lost.
As usual, there will be a potluck after the run, so please bring food or drink to share.
Why   A beautiful Marin Headlands run that starts near the Marine Mammal Center at Rodeo Beach. This run will afford fantastic views of Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean and surrounding hills.
Following the run, Stan Jensen will lead the club on a very special tour of the Marine Mammal Center starting after the potluck at about 11:00am and lasting just under one hour. This is a "not to miss" opportunity and limited to the first 20 paid PARC members (sorry, no guests).
Trail Directions
An online map of the Marin Headlands can be found here. We will provide printed copies of the map at the run. All distances are approximate. The long and short runs both stay together until reaching the peak.
